On the first available day to sign recruits, the BYU men’s basketball team has landed one of the top prospects in the nation.
Kyle Collinsworth made his commitment to BYU official by signing a national letter of intent on Nov. 11.
“We are excited with the addition of Kyle Collinsworth to our program,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said. “He was a national recruit who is a terrific competitor and an extremely versatile player. An athlete with the skill level to play multiple positions, Kyle is a talented scorer, a productive rebounder and a proficient distributor.”
Collinsworth is a 6-6 guard who averaged 18.4 points, 7.0 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game as a junior last year at Provo High. He led the Bulldogs to a 24-1 record and was named the 4A MVP by the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune, in addition to earning 4A tournament MVP and All-Valley honors from the Daily Herald.
ESPN ranked Collinsworth as the top high school player in Utah, saying he is a “strong wing with a good basketball body” and that he has a high basketball IQ.
Collinsworth will be teaming up with former teammate Brandon Davies and his older brother, Chris, who is currently serving a mission in Australia.
While playing with former teammates was definitely a factor in Collinsworth’s decision, he also said he was attracted to BYU’s fast-paced style and the chance to play point guard.
He plans to play one season with the defending conference champion Cougars before serving his two-year mission. He was also recruited by Kansas, Gonzaga, Arizona State, Cal, USC, Stanford, Utah State and Utah.
Collinsworth helped Provo High win state titles in his freshman and sophomore years, and he led them to a second-place finish his junior year. He has scored 1,195 points in his three seasons with the Bulldogs, and a 60-14 record, including a 40-game winning streak.
He also was a member of the nationally recognized Utah Pump N’ Run club team. He spent time this past summer participating in the NBA Top 100 Camp in Virginia.
