Utah Pump-N-Run, 04-25-2010

SALT LAKE CITY (April 27, 2010) – Utah Pump-N-Run’s 17U RED ELITE team knocked off Dream Vision, one of the country’s top teams, on Sunday at the Double Pump Spring Classic in Las Vegas. 17U RED trailed by four points with less than 44 seconds to play before Sam Orchard (Highland) found Nate Fakahafua (Highland) for a layup to cut the lead to two. After a Dream Vision missed free throw, Orchard again found Zach Stanley (Lehi) for a buzzer-beating three-point shot to win the game.

Dream Vision is one of the top programs in the country, with several five-star recruits such as 6’5 wing Shabazz Muhammad (Bishop Gorman, Las Vegas), 6’6 wing Winston Shepard (Findlay Prep, Henderson, NV) and 6’8 center Angelo Chol (Hoover, San Diego). The three recruits have received scholarship offers from various schools including Kansas, UCONN, Louisville, Georgetown and UCLA among many others.

17U RED ELITE put forth a strong effort defensively, led by 6’8 center Matt Sumsion (Springville), to hold Dream Vision to only 50 points after they had scored 100+ in every game prior. Sumsion came up with several key defensive stops down the stretch, including multiple inside defensive stands against California blue chip Angelo Chol.

17U RED beat Las Vegas Dogcatchers, Team Chandler Elite, and Team BR (Orange County) earlier in competition but then lost in the Elite 8 to eventual tournament champion California Supreme after a tightly contested game. 17U RED finished the tournament 4-1. Players participating in Las Vegas included Sam Orchard (Highland), Mike Brown (Wasatch), Blake Wilkinson (Viewmont), Austin Bankowski (Woods Cross), Matt Sumsion (Springville), Nate Fakahafua (Highland), Morgan Hesleph (Juan Diego), Zach Stanley (Lehi) and Austin Hudson (Brighton). Will Walker (Lehi) also joined the team as an unsigned senior for the Las Vegas tournament. The team, coached by Jason Long and Dave Thompson, is currently preparing for competition over Memorial Day at the Best Buy Chicago Classic.

Utah Pump-N-Run’s 16U RED and 15U RED teams also competed this past weekend in Las Vegas. 16U RED finished 3-1 in tournament play. Jordan Loveridge (West Jordan) averaged a double double while Marcel Davis (American Fork) logged near triple-doubles in two out of the four games. Other team members include Jaden Jackson (Skyline), Jordan Pryor (West Jordan), Davis Erickson (American Fork), Quincy Bair (American Fork) and Isaiah Tademy (Granger). Todd Phillips coaches the team.

15U RED finished tournament play after a three-point loss in the Elite 8 to the Las Vegas Prospects. The team finished 4-1. Team members include Stephan Holm (Riverton), Zach Hunsaker (Woods Cross), Jacek Hacking (Skyline), Dayon Goodman (Alta), David Divver (Highland), Dallin Bosco (Provo), Todd Connolly (Highland), Bryce Stone (Riverton), and Jared Stutzman (Bonneville, Idaho Falls).
