The Tribune has an article online today about the Provo basketball team, and star guard Kyle Collinsworth, who has signed with BYU.

Collinsworth recently received an award for being selected to the Best in the West first team. Best in the West is selected by the Long Beach Press-Telegram and its longtime basketball recruiting expert, Frank Burlison.

Here’s the bio on Collinsworth:

Guard
Ht.: 6-6 Wt.: 205
Coach: Craig Drury
BIW totals: 229 points

High school/summer resume: Collinsworth averaged 18.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game for the Provo Bulldogs, who won their first 24 games before losing to West of Salt Lake City (56-43) in the state 4-A championship game - depriving them of a third consecutive title.

Collinsworth also led his traveling team to a strong showing in the adidas Super 64 Tournament in Las Vegas in July.

National rating: No. 95 (Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports Top 250)

Summer camp/traveling team: NBA Players' Association Camp/Utah Pump-N-Run

Why he is rated this highly: His skills are such that it is hard to project the position he is best suited for in college. His jump shot is much improved and has to be honored to the 3-point arc. And he passes and handles well enough to spend a lot of time at the point for his prep and traveling teams. But he is also a dependable rebounder and determined defender (in the post and on the perimeter), with an advanced low-post offensive game.

College commitment: Brigham Young University

Frank says: Considering the caliber of programs that pursued him, Collinsworth will be the most significant recruit landed in a while by the Cougars.

Members of the Best of the West team were selected from players from high schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

The team was selected by college coaches and from scouts who operate recruiting services or report for Web sites that cover recruiting.

Former Best in the West First Team selections that have attended BYU include Danny Ainge, Steve Trumbo, Mike Smith, Ken Roberts and Shawn Bradley.
